On Sunday 30 November, the congregation of Christ Church Hackenthorpe was delighted to receive the news from the Bishop of Sheffield that Revd Jane Emson has been appointed Priest in Charge of the Benefice of Christ Church Hackenthorpe and Oversight Minister in the Mission Area of South East Attercliffe.A brief introduction from Jane:Hello, I'm Revd Sister Jane Emson. I am truly excited to be coming to Christ Church Hackenthorpe, getting to know my new church family, and being involved in all the wonderful things taking place.I believe that the Lord has brought us together to build on what has already been achieved and to draw many more to him, both in Hackenthorpe and in the wider mission area.Returning to my hometown of Sheffield means a great deal to me, and I can't wait to be closer to my children, grandchildren, family and friends. We look forward to welcoming Jane as she seeks to make the move to Hackenthorpe in the near future!
Blokes meet at Christ Church Hackenthorpe every other week on Wednesdays . Here Rev Philip tells us more about what's involved:"Blokes was started by Christian business man, Matt Gavin, four years ago. Blokes S13 started 18 months ago and now meets fortnightly on Wednesday evenings in the hall at Christchurch, Hackenthorpe. 15 men meet regularly for a varied programme. We are very aware of the struggles that men go through with their mental health and we encourage group members to share. We also know that loneliness and isolation are big issues for men in these online days and we are developing awareness in ways in which the group can help. Last term we ran sessions on positive thinking, hope, and the healthiness of creativity. The group has seen a number of strong friendships develop and has enabled members to lead healthy and creative lives. The programme includes Christian input but we also try to have relaxed social events such as a big curry night and mindfulness walks.A typical evening starts at 7p.m. with coffee/tea and pizza and then an hour or so input with plenty of time for discussion, questions and lots of laughter. There is no charge for the evening, and no need to sign up for anything. We warmly welcome any one of faith or none, and anyone who just wants to come and see what the group is about. We have another mindfulness walk on 13th August and then a short break until we meet again on 10th September, then 24th September, 8th October, 22nd October. I am more than happy to chat about the group if you are not sure if it is for you - 07882027473. Philip"
Every Monday we gather 9.45am-10.30am to pray together. Here June tells us why she enjoys going:"It's such a good way to start your week before all the pressures and trials of life begin. You can leave yourself outside and soak with God, it’s only for 45 minutes but you get so much from it.You feel at peace as soon as you come through the door, you are welcomed with a cuppa, and as a group we feel very comfortable with each other. We are a mixed group, including having people come from other churches, and someone who is unable to attend church regularly on a Sunday. We use liturgy, starting with giving thanks to God for His goodness and for what he is doing in our lives and our church, as well as for answered prayer. We then worship through reading a psalm together and engaging with a song, and then we read from another part of the Bible and we discuss what we feel God is showing us. There’s usually a theme to it that the person leading will have, and it’s all brought together when we have a time of worship, where we see where the Spirit is leading us.We end by praying for each other, our families, friends, and whatever God might put upon our hearts. One morning while we were praying one of our group started to pray for someone else and it turned out on this particular morning that they were very much in need of prayer, and it blew the person away when they realised that the prayer was very specific to their situation, and that God should become so real and personal just for them."
