Thinking about Baptism?

Welcome

Baptism is one of the most joyful and hope-filled celebrations in the Church. Whether you are thinking about it for your child or for yourself, we’d love to help you explore what baptism means and to walk alongside you on this special journey of faith.

What is Baptism?

Baptism, sometimes called christening, is a joyful celebration of God’s love and the beginning of an amazing journey of faith. It’s the moment we welcome someone into the family of the Church and give thanks for the gift of life. In baptism, we turn towards Christ, make promises about faith and life, and become part of the worldwide Christian family – a beautiful reminder that God knows us, loves us, and calls us by name. Baptism is just the first step on a lifelong journey with God, and the whole church community promises to walk alongside you, offering prayer, support, and encouragement along the way.

Who can be Baptized?

Baptism is open to anyone – babies, children, young people, and adults – who wants to begin or continue their journey with God. For children, parents and godparents make promises on their behalf, helping them to grow in faith until they can make those promises for themselves. Godparents should be baptised themselves, as they commit to praying for and supporting the child as they grow. Adults and older children make their own promises and often have a sponsor to support them.

How Baptism Happens Here

At St James’, baptisms usually take place in our main Sunday service at 10:30am. We believe this is the best way to welcome someone into the Church family – surrounded by the worship, prayers, and love of the congregation.

Before the baptism day, we invite you to a baptism preparation meeting. These are friendly, relaxed sessions where we talk about what baptism means, what happens in the service, and how we as a church can support you in your journey of faith. It’s also a chance to meet other families exploring baptism.

What Happens on the Day?

On the day, you and your family will be warmly welcomed by the congregation. The service will include readings, prayers, and hymns, and then the baptism itself. The vicar will ask you to make promises about faith and life, and water will be poured over the head as a sign of new life in Christ. The newly baptised will be signed with the cross and hen the service continues with Holy Communion.

At the end of the service a candle is given– a sign of the light of Christ.

It’s a joyful and meaningful moment, and we hope you’ll feel truly part of God’s family here.

After Baptism The Journey Continues

Baptism is not the end – it’s the beginning of an exciting journey with God. We encourage you to come along to church services, family worship, and events so your faith (and your child’s faith) can grow.

We are here to pray for you, encourage you, and help you discover more of God’s love as the journey unfolds.
