The ancient Church of St James stands on a hill from which you can see the southern Pennines to the west and the flat North Lincolnshire plains stretching out to the east.

This rural church has a rich history and there are many ancient and unique features that have been enjoyed by Christians worshipping in this place for about 1,000 years.

Established before the Norman Conquest and largely rebuilt by the Priory at Hampole in the 12th Century, all of the architecture is pre-Reformation, with many of the interior embellishments being added in Georgian and late Victorian times.

The magnificent Stained Glass is a feature of this church, much of it mediaeval and originating from both New College, Oxford, and York Minster.

The other major things to look out for are the spectacular Victorian Gothic rood screen and detailed reredos by Sir Ninian Comper, the mediaeval goblet-shaped font and the four gargoyles looking down at you from the tower.

St James Church is a perfect venue for Weddings, given our lovely setting and being right next to one of South Yorkshire's best Wedding Reception Venues, known as 'The Stables'.

We hold services on Sundays in rotation with our sister churches (St Peter, Barnburgh, and St John the Baptist, Adwick-upon-Dearne), at 9.30am and our worship follows the traditional, broad church heritage. Our normal Sunday congregation, given our rural setting, is normally less than two-dozen, making it an intimate and contemplative place to worship.
