This atmospheric service begins in darkness, building up to a glorious light as the coming of Jesus is foretold. In word and music, themes of prophecy and expectation come together, pointing the way towards the salvation of the world.

Beautiful music is sung by the Cathedral Choir, whose journey through the building reminds us of our own spiritual journey towards the light of Christ, in anticipation of the glories of Christmas. Entry is not ticketed; however early arrival is advised.

The Christingle service is an unmissable milestone for families on the journey to Christmas. All welcome for oranges, candles, and carols.

The Minster’s Crib Service is a fabulous opportunity for families to get into the Christmas spirit, with carols led by a folk band with help from the younger Cathedral Choristers, and the chance for children to dress up as characters from the Christmas story.

The first Eucharist of Christmas, this service is popular the world over. As we gather in the depths of night, we celebrate the
dawning of a glorious light in the birth of Christ.

With carols

Our principal Eucharist for Christmas Day is a service for all ages, with music sung by the Cathedral Choir, as well as familiar Christmas hymns.

Festal Mattins is sung by the Cathedral Choir, with uplifting music by Stanford, Mathias and Warlock. Another chance to sing some Christmas hymns, and rejoice in the festive atmosphere of the Minster at Christmas.

Holy Communion on Christmas Day

On Christmas Day afternoon, Evening Prayer offers a moment of stillness after the joyful festivities, as well as an opportunity to sing some more carols.

Epiphany Sung Eucharist

Britten A Ceremony of Carols. As part of the Friday Lunchtime at the Cathedral series, the Cathedral Choristers, with Thea Maund (harp), perform Benjamin Britten’s timeless A Ceremony of Carols, alongside other music for the festive season.

Entry is not ticketed; however, early arrival is advised.

Continuing the season of the Nativity, this service explores the Coming of the Magi, the Baptism of Christ, and the Miracle at the Wedding in Cana. Choir and congregation move together round the Minster, as the building helps us tell the story.

The beautiful feast of Candlemas brings the traditional 40 days of Christmas to an end. We begin to look forward to Lent, blessed by the Light of Christ.
