Christ Church, Sowerby Bridge is preparing to host a very special evening as part of its 500th anniversary celebrations, marking half a millennium of Christian worship at the heart of the community.
On Saturday 9th May 2026, visitors are warmly invited to attend “A Journey Through 500 Years of Faith,” a fascinating history talk presented by Peter Henry, exploring the story of the church from its earliest beginnings through to the present day.
The talk will trace the origins of Christian worship in Sowerby Bridge back to the Old Brig Chapel in 1526, once situated down by the river, before following the journey through centuries of change, growth, and community life to today’s Christ Church. Along the way, attendees will discover stories of the people, places, and events that have shaped not only the church, but the wider town itself.
As part of the evening, there will also be a rare opportunity to view items from the church archives. These carefully preserved records and artefacts offer a tangible connection to the past, bringing to life the generations who have worshipped, gathered, and built community over the last 500 years.
Speaking ahead of the event, Peter Henry said:
“This isn’t just a talk about buildings or dates — it’s about people, faith, and community. For 500 years, there has been a Christian presence here in Sowerby Bridge, and this evening is a chance to reflect on that journey, to uncover some fascinating stories, and to celebrate what has come before us. It’s also about looking forward, recognising that we are now part of that continuing story.”
The evening has been designed to be both engaging and welcoming, offering not only an insight into local history but also an opportunity to come together as a community. A pie and pea supper is included as part of the ticket, giving guests the chance to relax, chat, and enjoy the occasion together.
Doors will open at 6:00pm, allowing time to explore the archive display before the talk begins at 7:00pm.
Tickets are £5.00, available in church or online.
Whether you are a long-standing member of Christ Church, have connections to the area, or simply enjoy discovering local history, this promises to be a memorable evening.
All are very welcome to attend and be part of this milestone moment in the life of Christ Church.
