Flags were waving, voices were raised, and the wonderful sound of brass music filled Christ Church, Sowerby Bridge, on Saturday 17 October, as Friendly Brass Band returned for a spectacular Last Night of the Proms concert.
The evening was a fantastic celebration of music, friendship and community spirit, with our very own local brass band treating the audience to a wonderful programme of music, ranging from traditional marches and much-loved classics to stirring patriotic favourites.
For Christ Church, the evening was about much more than just music. It was another opportunity to celebrate a special relationship between the church and Friendly Brass Band, a connection that stretches back many years.
Rebuilding a Special Friendship
The relationship between Friendly Brass Band and Christ Church goes back to the days when the band would join the church for the traditional Whit Sunday parade, providing music as the congregation and community came together for this important occasion in the church calendar.
Over the years, that connection had faded, but we are delighted that we have been able to rekindle this historic friendship and once again bring the band and church together.
Saturday's concert marked Friendly Brass Band's third visit to Christ Church in the past year, something we are particularly proud of. Each visit has helped strengthen the relationship between two organisations that share a long history of bringing people together through music and community life.
We hope this renewed partnership will continue to flourish for many years to come.
A Wonderful Programme of Music
The band certainly didn't disappoint, delivering a varied and entertaining programme that offered something for everyone.
The evening featured a fantastic selection of pieces, including Barnard Castle, The Dam Busters, Can't Take My Eyes Off You, When the Saints, Singin' in the Rain, Disney Matters, Lloyd, The Essential Glenn Miller and the Beatles classic Yesterday.
There were also moments of reflection, with beautiful performances of Eventide and Elgar's much-loved Nimrod.
As the evening moved towards its grand finale, the atmosphere became even more special with Fantasia on British Sea Songs, Jerusalem and, of course, Pomp and Circumstance.
And what would a Last Night of the Proms be without a little audience participation?
Union Jack flags were waved enthusiastically, voices joined together in song, and the church was filled with a wonderful sense of celebration. The evening concluded with the National Anthem, bringing a memorable concert to a fitting close.
It was fantastic to see everyone getting into the spirit of the occasion, proving once again that live music has a wonderful ability to bring people together.
A Huge Thank You
An evening like this doesn't happen without a great deal of hard work and generosity behind the scenes.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to every member of Friendly Brass Band for sharing their musical talents with us and providing such a fantastic evening of entertainment. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a talented band right here in our local community, and it is always a pleasure to welcome them to Christ Church.
Our thanks also go to the many members of our congregation who helped make the evening possible, whether through preparing the church, welcoming visitors, selling tickets and raffle tickets, helping throughout the concert or staying behind afterwards.
A special thank you must also go to everyone who generously donated prizes for the raffle. Your kindness and support are greatly appreciated and help make occasions like this such a success.
It is this willingness to give time, talents and resources that makes our church community so special.
Music, Community and a Shared History
As Christ Church continues to celebrate 500 years of Christian witness in Sowerby Bridge, evenings like this remind us that the church is not simply a building, but a place where friendships are formed, traditions are celebrated and the wider community comes together.
Rebuilding our historic connection with Friendly Brass Band is a wonderful example of how relationships from the past can be renewed and given fresh life for future generations.
To everyone who joined us, waved a flag, sang along, bought a raffle ticket or simply enjoyed the music — thank you for helping make the evening so special.
And to our friends at Friendly Brass Band, thank you once again for a truly memorable concert.
We look forward to welcoming you back to Christ Church very soon! 🎺🇬🇧
