October News

A focus on water and water usage - something that has been on the news with “severe drought” being declared in parts of Southern England and “drought” more or less everywhere else, brought our Creationtide services to a close. To help us reflect on its intrinsic value, the congregation was invited to bring a small amount of water from home (not tap water). Water butts, garden ponds and even a bird bath were pressed into service, proving that our parish is nothing if not resourceful.

Our Harvest Breakfast Service linked to Christian Aid’s project to support Urban gardening. It was fascinating to see just how, using Cone gardens and restricted water supplies, families could grow enough to feed themselves and still have enough to sell, thus allowing children to get to school.

The Harvest Festival service on the 27th September was followed by a cheerful bring and share lunch in the Narthex where we enjoyed sausage rolls and sangria alongside the more traditional ploughman’s. The church interior looked particularly striking thanks to some beautiful flower arrangements and the low Autumn sun pouring through the south windows.

Collections from these three services will be divided between Christian Aid and the Farming Community Network (FCN) who provide vital support for our beleaguered farmers.

On the first Saturday in October our doors were open from 3pm to 8pm for the much-anticipated Gin Festival. Holy Water – a brand-new tipple pulled together using botanical treasures identified in each of the Severn Parish Churchyards and expertly combined by Piston Gin - was unleashed on an unsuspecting public. Fr Tim, Mary and their son Ben were kept busy at the bar serving samples and making cocktails. The warm vibe was amplified by the wonderfully talented Peter Tomlinson and his jazz band who entertained with a wide selection of songs and music. A big thank you to everyone who supported the event, especially those who joined us from outside the regular congregation. It was a joy to welcome you – and to raise a glass (or two) together.

Looking Forward to the beginning of December we will be having a Crib Festival ‘Away in a Manger’ and would like as many cribs as possible on display in St Andrews - would you be willing to bring yours down? The church will always be monitored while it’s open and more precious ones can be displayed ‘at a distance’.
