FRIENDS OF ST PETER’S CHURCH ST PAULINUS CAMPAIGN We live in a very special community full of wonderful people. You may not know that part of our history is also very special. In AD 626 St Paulinus baptised 10,000 Christian converts in the River Swale from the field below our Church. There has been a church here ever since and, some years later a church school. The 1400th anniversary is in December 2026. We want to celebrate that anniversary in December 2026 by having our Church in the best possible condition to host the events we have planned. The Friends of St Peter’s Church was set up in 2020 when the church roof was stolen. It has continued to fund the maintenance of the fabric of the building, which is constant. In 2024 the Friends paid for repairs to the St Paulinus Chapel roof and we are currently raising money towards roof stonework repair costing c£25,000. Friends donations are critical to maintain this historic Grade II* listed church. Its future depends on us. The Church of England does not maintain villages churches – they belong to the people of the Parish and the people – you - decide how they are used. Friends often do not have faith, but they are willing to support their village church and all that goes on. The Friends have an annual reception, get togethers and tours – and carols, concerts, coffees and school events are all attended by those without faith. All money donated to the Friends is spent on St Peter’s Church building. No element of Friends’ money is transferred anywhere else. You can become a Friend and make a regular donation. The equivalent of buying a coffee (£4.00) or a small portion of fish and chips (£10) per month would help the Friends enormously. St Peter’s Church Friends supports the fabric of the church building.
