A site of Christian worship for a thousand years or more, situated on a small rise in the ground between Stokesley's elegant Market Square and picturesque Leven riverside, the Church of St. Peter & St. Paul is a visible sign of Christ's presence at the heart of our busy market town, and is open each day for visiting and for prayer.
The building itself consists of a modest medieval chancel (now an intimate Lady Chapel) and late medieval tower, between which a spacious new nave (without pillars) was built in Georgian style in the 1770s. A reordering in 1975 provided an open and flexible space for worship, the creative arts, and community activity: valuing our heritage but also serving current needs.
Our worshipping community includes an active choir, music group, and bellringing band, as well as prayer, action and social groups, children's and young people's activities, and a rhythm of eucharists and daily prayer at which visitors are always welcome.
We serve a parish which includes not only the town of Stokesley itself, but also the nearby small villages and hamlets of Seamer, Newby, Tame Bridge and Tanton, and our parish includes a second, smaller, church at St. Martins' Seamer (which is not to be confused with the better-known church and village of the same name near Scarborough).
Stokesley is also home to Methodist and Catholic churches (with whom we share some joint activities) and an independent Christian Fellowship.
