About Us

Welcome to the website for St John the Evangelist's, the parish church of Dalton (near Thirsk). Here you will find a few details about us, details of our services, and contact details.

The Parish is part of the Benefice of Topcliffe, Baldersby with Dishforth, Dalton and Skipton on Swale, and is served by the Vicar, (currently vacant), the Churchwarden Terry Thorpe, and the PCC. We have a lovely church, designed by the famous architect William Butterfield in the 1850s, with flexible seating and now with the addition, in the churchyard, of a composting toilet. Full details of the activities in the benefice can be found by going to the websites for the other churches, through the parish magazine Cross Talk, or by looking on the noticeboard at church.

We are a small congregation that meets on a fortnightly basis for worship:

First Sunday in the month           at 9.15am              for Holy Communion (Common Worship) or a more informal Service of the Word, in rotation

and on the

Third Sunday in the month          at 6.30pm              for Evensong or Holy Communion (Common Worship), in rotation

You can be assured that this warm and outgoing community will look forward to welcoming you.

We also run a Mums and Tots session in the Village Hall every Friday morning; Messy Church is held quarterly, at the Church at Baldersby St James; we have a fantastic community Carol Service just before Christmas; a Dawn Service on Easter Morning; Vintage Tea and Harvest Thanksgiving; and two amazing Sunday Lunches, one in the spring and the other in the autumn.

In 2018, we celebrated 150 years since the church was built with as series of many and varied events.

These are just some of the things going on at St John's as we celebrate God's love through worship and fellowship, seek to make Jesus known, and be of service in the community.
