World Day of Prayer: A Global Wave of Solidarity

The World Day of Prayer (WDP) is a massive, women-led movement that has been connecting people across the globe for over 150 years. It’s one of the oldest and largest grassroots networks in the world, focused on informed prayer and prayerful action.

The History in a Nutshell: Led by Women: It began in the 19th century when women in North America who were often excluded from leadership roles formed their own boards to tackle social issues and support women and children worldwide.

Global, Not Local: Following WWI, the movement grew into a global mission for peace. Since 1927, it has evolved into a "circle of prayer" that spans over 170 countries.

A Partnership of Equals: The core philosophy shifted in 1928 from "helping from afar" to praying with, not for our sisters of other races and nations.

How it Works Today: Every year, on the first Friday of March, a different country takes the lead. A committee of women from that nation writes the program, sharing their culture, their struggles, and their hopes.

When you join a WDP event, you aren't just attending a service; you are joining a 24-hour wave of connection that follows the sun around the globe listening to the voices of women from another part of the world and standing with them in solidarity.

St Elwyn

St Elwyn’s is one of Hayle’s most recognisable landmarks, known for its striking architecture and its long tradition of welcoming people from every walk of life. Built in 1888 and often called the “Cathedral of Hayle,” the church is shaped by the Anglo‑Catholic style of worship, which places a strong emphasis on beauty, music, and meaningful ritual.

Inside, visitors find colourful stained glass, peaceful chapels, and a sense of stillness that many people value whether or not they consider themselves religious. The church’s services use rich symbolism, candles, and music to create an atmosphere that feels reflective and grounded.

At its heart, St Elwyn’s is a place that values community, hospitality, and the idea that sacred spaces can help people pause, breathe, and reconnect with what matters. Whether someone comes to explore the building, attend an event, light a candle, or simply enjoy a moment of quiet, St Elwyn’s continues to be a gentle and steady presence in the life of Hayle.
