For the past 40 years many families in Stanningley and the surrounding area have enjoyed a lovely Christmas Eve tradition, meeting at St Thomas’ Church for a Christingle Service. Up to 200 people of all generations fill the church. People who donned shepherd costumes to take part in the service when they were children, now bring their own children. For many families, this marks the beginning of their Christmas festivities. This is not only a much — loved start to Christmas, it has also raised thousands of pounds for The Children’s Society, supporting them in their mission to help children across the UK experiencing difficult times in their lives. This year of course, the Christingle service has been cancelled due to the Covid 19 virus. However, church members are determined to keep the Christmas spirit alive in Stanningley by creating a Nativity scene in the churchyard. On Sunday 20th December, the sheep(!) will arrive, together with their shepherds, camel, kings, Mary, Joseph and of course baby Jesus. Everyone is warmly invited to visit the spectacle. People who would like to make a donation to the Children’s Society will find church members available to accept them between 5pm and 7pm each evening. On Christmas Eve, “DIY” Christingle kits will be handed out when your donation is made. If you are unable to attend you could donate by making a bank transfer to: St Thomas Stanningley Account no 11383530 sort code 05 00 20 reference "Christingle". However you will be celebrating this year, the members of St Thomas’ Church wish you a safe, blessed and peaceful Christmas.
