St Andrew’s Moulton

St Andrew’s Church in Moulton, just 1.7 miles from St Michael and All Angels, Middleton Tyas, is a Chapel of Ease, Moulton and Middleton Tyas forming one Parish.  St Andrew’s is also known as “Moulton Mission Church” in some documents.

Moulton today has a population of about 150 spread across a large rural area and includes  two large properties – Moulton Manor and Moulton Hall, the latter in the care of the National Trust.

Little is known about the history of the Church which it is believed was once a barn.  At the east end there are signs of an old roof line.

A plaque on the south wall reads as follows:

“Sacred to the memory of William Ward, Esq of the City of Chester, Deputy Registrar and Secretary to the Bishop of that Diocese, who died August 7 1837, Aged 73.

At the close of his life he had this building made suitable for a Church of England place of worship in which he took the deepest interest but he did not live to see it quite completed.

Erected by his daughter, Jane Parry”

Moulton and Middleton Tyas were once in the Diocese of Chester.

Until relatively recent times, the Church was heated by a small coal stove, its chimney exit still visible in the roof.  A foot pedal harmonium provided the music.  Today, efficient electric heaters keep the building warm and an electric organ has replaced the harmonium.

A side table has a plaque to the memory of G R Smithson, Esq formerly of Moulton Manor and at the west end is a large painted board depicting the Ten Commandments and the Creed together with an armorial lozenge.

In 2009, the village hall having been demolished due to its precarious state, residents embarked on a programme of converting the Church to a community facility.  The pews were removed, a new floor covering installed, the church decorated and tables and chairs purchased.  Later, the old vestry became a kitchen and toilet.  The Church is now used by the village for events and is hired to organisations for Tia Chi and Pilates.  The Parish Meeting is held here and the Church is available for parties and meetings.

Evensong or Communion is held on the second Sunday of each month throughout the year.  A well attended Carol Service takes place on Christmas Eve.
