Sunday 30 November – Advent Sunday

Advent Sunday marks the beginning of the church calendar year.

The four-week Advent season, leading up to Christmas, is a time of expectation and hope as we move towards a new beginning and prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ.

Advent falls at the darkest time of the year and the natural symbols of darkness and light are powerfully at work throughout Advent and Christmas.

Lord Jesus, light of light, you have come among us.
Help us who live by your light to shine as lights in your world.
Glory to God in the highest.
Amen.

Reading and Gospel

Our reading this week is from Romans 13 verses 11-14. Paul urges us to live righteous lives reflecting Christ's character and to adopt a lifestyle that aligns with God's purpose.

"Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light"

The full verses can be found in the New Testament on page 173 of your pew bibles.

Our Gospel reading from Matthew 24 verses 36-44 is on page 29 of the New Testament in your pew bibles.

In our reading, Paul asks that you "wake from sleep" and here Matthew's gospel also highlights the need for spiritual awakening and watchfulness.

"Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming."
