Sunday 3 May: 5th Sunday of Easter
Our Services will be led by Revd Sue Irwin
This Sunday we continue our Sermon Series looking at the way Jesus rising from the dead transformed how we live as “Resurrection People”.
This week we hear how the disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray – just as John taught his disciples.
Readings and Gospel
Our first reading, from Psalm 2 1-8, is on page 519 of the Old Testament in our pew bibles. The kings and rulers on earth set themselves against the Lord and his anointed but are warned that they should serve the Lord with fear for his anger is quickly kindled.
The reading from Acts 4 23-31 is on page 130 of the New Testament in our pew bibles. Recalling the words from Psalm 2, the disciples reject the threats to them made by the chief priests and elders and pray to the Lord that he will help them to speak and teach His word with boldness.
The Gospel reading for this week is from Luke 11 1-13 which you will find on page 77 of the New Testament in our pew bibles. Jesus first teaches his disciples The Lord’s Prayer. The parable which follows, about the friend asking for bread at midnight, encourages us to pray with boldness and perseverance.
“Ask and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.” (Verse 9)
