All Saints' Bisham Pew News: Sunday 17 May

Sunday 17 May: 7th Sunday of Easter

Our Service will be led by Revd Sam Follett and Revd Sami Watts

This year, the 7th Sunday of Easter falls after Ascension Day and before Pentecost Sunday on 24 May. We join the disciples in a period of “active preparation”, gathering in prayer and unity while awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit as promised by Jesus.

We continue our Sermon Series exploring how ordinary followers are transformed by the living Christ.

Readings and Gospel

Our Readings and Gospel this week focus on the promise of the Holy Spirit, the empowerment of the disciples and the global mission of their early Church.

Our first reading from Joel 2: 28-29 is on page 881 of the Old Testament in our pew bibles. The Word of the Lord comes to Joel, and we hear the prophesy which was later quoted by Peter (Acts 2: verse 17) when the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit:

“I will pour out my spirit on all flesh”

The reading from Acts 1: 6-14 is on page 126 of the New Testament in our pew bibles. Immediately prior to His Ascension, Jesus reassures His disciples with His promise that the Holy Spirit will give them strength to carry on His Mission:

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you: and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

The Apostles and followers of Jesus then gather in the upper room, devoted to prayer, while waiting for the Holy Spirit.

The Gospel reading for this week is from Matthew 28: 16-20 which you will find on page 36 of the New Testament in our pew bibles.

Following His resurrection, Jesus meets His eleven disciples on a mountain in Galilee. Here, he commissions them to:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
