Trinity Sunday is a Christian feast to honour the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is typically celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost.
This week we also begin our new Sermon series looking at Joseph’s story – “Hope in the mess of life.” The story begins with a family at war and ends with the mystery of providence. It is a story of suffering and grace but also of a hope that lasts.
Reading and Gospel
Our first reading is from Genesis 37:1-4, 17-36 which can be found on pages 36 and 37 of the Old Testament in our pew bibles.
The story of Joseph begins with jealousy and betrayal. Joseph comes from a large, and somewhat complicated family; he is one of twelve brothers who eventually form the foundations of the twelve tribes of Israel.
Joseph is just seventeen years old and as he is their father’s favourite son, his brothers hated him and could not speak peaceably to him. They hated him even more because of his dreams and soon conspired to kill him.
However, as he is their own flesh and blood, they are persuaded by Judah to sell him to some passing traders “for twenty pieces of silver.” Their treachery however sets Joseph on his path to Egypt where he will rise to great power in the service of Pharaoh.
The Gospel reading is from Matthew 26:14-16 which you will find on page 31 of the New Testament in our pew bibles.
Rather than twelve brothers we now have twelve disciples. And one of their number, Judas Iscariot, starts looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus to the chief priests and the elders of the people in exchange for “thirty pieces of silver.”
