Sunday 7 June: First Sunday after Trinity
Our 8.00am and 9.30am services will be led by Revd Carol Cooper, Revd Mieke Gaynor and Revd Gabrielle Smith
The season after Trinity is a period of “ordinary time.” There are less special occasions, so it is a period for developing good rhythms in our spiritual lives and strengthening our relationship with God in quiet, consistent ways.
In the second part of our new Sermon series, our attention switches to one of Joseph’s brothers, Judah and his relationship with his daughter-in-law Tamar. We are reminded that in all things God works for the good of those who love him and that redemption is possible for everyone, even in the messiest of lives.
Reading and Gospel
Our first reading is from Genesis 38: 12-30 which starts on pages 37 of the Old Testament in our pew bibles.
We leave Joseph in Egypt to follow the story of Judah and Tamar - who is the wife to Judah’s firstborn son. The Lord is displeased with the eldest two of Judah’s sons and puts each of them to death. Tamar is then sent to live as a widow in her father’s house until Judah’s youngest son, Shelah, is grown up and she can be given to him in marriage.
Tamar eventually ends up conceiving two sons – Zerah and Perez. But the father is Judah not Shelah.
The Gospel reading is from Matthew 1: 1-6a which you will find on page 1 of the New Testament in our pew bibles.
Matthew’s Gospel begins with an account of the genealogy of Jesus. Judah and Perez are listed as direct ancestors of King David and ultimately:
“… Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah.” Matthew 1: 16
