Sunday 7 June: First Sunday after Trinity Our 8.00am and 9.30am services will be led by Revd Carol Cooper, Revd Mieke Gaynor and Revd Gabrielle Smith The season after Trinity is a period of “ordinary time.” There are less special occasions, so it is a period for developing good rhythms in our spiritual lives and strengthening our relationship with God in quiet, consistent ways. In the second part of our new Sermon series, our attention switches to one of Joseph’s brothers, Judah and his relationship with his daughter-in-law Tamar. We are reminded that in all things God works for the good of those who love him and that redemption is possible for everyone, even in the messiest of lives.Reading and Gospel Our first reading is from Genesis 38: 12-30 which starts on pages 37 of the Old Testament in our pew bibles. We leave Joseph in Egypt to follow the story of Judah and Tamar - who is the wife to Judah’s firstborn son. The Lord is displeased with the eldest two of Judah’s sons and puts each of them to death. Tamar is then sent to live as a widow in her father’s house until Judah’s youngest son, Shelah, is grown up and she can be given to him in marriage. Tamar eventually ends up conceiving two sons – Zerah and Perez. But the father is Judah not Shelah. The Gospel reading is from Matthew 1: 1-6a which you will find on page 1 of the New Testament in our pew bibles. Matthew’s Gospel begins with an account of the genealogy of Jesus. Judah and Perez are listed as direct ancestors of King David and ultimately: “… Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah.” Matthew 1: 16 Notices 1. Trinity Sunday is a Christian feast to honour the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is typically celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost. This week we also begin our new Sermon series looking at Joseph’s story – “Hope in the mess of life.” The story begins with a family at war and ends with the mystery of providence. It is a story of suffering and grace but also of a hope that lasts. Reading and Gospel Our first reading is from Genesis 37:1-4, 17-36 which can be found on pages 36 and 37 of the Old Testament in our pew bibles. The story of Joseph begins with jealousy and betrayal. Joseph comes from a large, and somewhat complicated family; he is one of twelve brothers who eventually form the foundations of the twelve tribes of Israel. Joseph is just seventeen years old and as he is their father’s favourite son, his brothers hated him and could not speak peaceably to him. They hated him even more because of his dreams and soon conspired to kill him. However, as he is their own flesh and blood, they are persuaded by Judah to sell him to some passing traders “for twenty pieces of silver.” Their treachery however sets Joseph on his path to Egypt where he will rise to great power in the service of Pharaoh. The Gospel reading is from Matthew 26:14-16 which you will find on page 31 of the New Testament in our pew bibles. Rather than twelve brothers we now have twelve disciples. And one of their number, Judas Iscariot, starts looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus to the chief priests and the elders of the people in exchange for “thirty pieces of silver.” Notices 1. Sunday 24 May: Pentecost Our 9.30am service will be led by Revd Carol Cooper and Revd Gabrielle Smith The Day of Pentecost marks fifty days since Easter Day and brings the Easter season to a close. Christians recall how God’s Holy Spirit was given to the disciples after Jesus’ Ascension, empowering them to begin the work of making disciples of all nations. The Church is now to be the new body of Christ, filled with his life through the gift of the Holy Spirit. The colour often associated with Pentecost is red, representing the tongues of fire appearing above the heads of the disciples as a sign that they had received the Holy Spirit: “Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.” Acts 2: 3 Reading and Gospel Our Reading and Gospel this week focus upon the Coming of the Holy Spirit. The first reading is from Acts 2: 1-21 which can be found on page 127 of the Old Testament in our pew bibles. “And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting” Acts 2: 2 The crowds gathered in Jerusalem for the Festival of Weeks represented many different nationalities and spoke diverse languages. Yet everyone was able to hear the disciples speaking in their own native language. The Gospel reading is from John 7: 37-39 which you will find on page107 of the New Testament in our pew bibles. On the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus proclaimed: “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and let the one who believes in me drink.” John 7: 37-38 John clarifies that when Jesus is talking about “rivers of living water”, he is in fact speaking about the Holy Spirit who will dwell within believers. It is the subsequent glorification of Jesus - His death, resurrection and ascension - which make this outpouring of the Holy Spirit possible. Notices 1.
