Over 60 members and guests from surrounding WI’s enjoyed a wonderful night of magic on Tuesday the 11th August. As it was an open meeting Members also brought along friends to enjoy the evening. JD Magic (Jack) entertained the ladies for over 45 minutes with different sorts of magic tricks, close up, parlour magic , comedy magic when Rocky the Raccoon made his appearance and finally stage magic. He explained that 22 male members set up The Magic Circle but in 2016 the magic circle had their first female president. If only we knew how those tricks were done! After the magic, the ladies enjoyed tea and a wonderful selection of home made cakes. Lots of ladies took home some very nice raffle prizes as well.Over 40 members and guests attended the monthly meeting of Stowe WI on Tuesday 8th September, where after the formal part of the meeting, the ladies enjoyed listening to Jon Webb, The Bug Man. Jon works for Natural England. He gave us a fascinating interactive talk about Invertebrates and how many species there are that are classed as invertebrates. Who knew that there were over 4000 different species of beetles in the UK, but only 660 different species of spiders! After his presentation, Jon took questions about bugs, ranging from the increases of bugs on front of cars to climate change. Jon explained how we live in a special area , where there are rare insects on Chartley Moss and the trees of Shugborough and Brocton Coppice which many invertebrates call home. Jane N gave the vote of thanks. Jane H from Stowe Village Hall presented the committee with their prize for winning First Prize in the Group Award at the Stowe By Chartley Scarecrow competition, with their interpretation of Nursery Rhymes ; Three Blind Mice, Diddly Squat. Thanks again to Jane J and Elaine for all their hard work.
