About Us

Welcome to St Stephen the Martyr, Wolverhampton where we proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ through word, sacrament, and service.

We are a warm and welcoming Christian community in the Anglo-Catholic tradition, centred upon Jesus Christ and nourished by his Word and Sacraments.

The Mass is at the heart of our common life. We gather each Sunday at 11.00am for Sung Mass, offering God worship that is reverent, joyful and rooted in the Catholic tradition of the Church of England. In the Mass we hear the Holy Scriptures, receive the Body and Blood of Christ, and are sent out to serve our neighbours and bear witness to the Gospel.

Our story began in 1872, when a mission church was founded to serve the artisans and railway workers of Springfield. The present church was consecrated in 1908 and has remained a place of prayer and sacramental worship for more than a century. Today, our congregation is drawn both from the parish and from across Wolverhampton and the surrounding area.

Alongside our worship, we enjoy a growing parish life shaped by prayer, friendship and mutual care. We seek to support one another in the Christian life, to care for the sick and housebound, to encourage children and young people in faith, and to serve the wider community. We also value our close relationship with St Stephen’s Church of England Primary School.

St Stephen’s is conveniently situated on Hilton Street, within easy walking distance of Wolverhampton Railway Station, the Midland Metro and the city centre.

We are part of the Diocese of Lichfield and, as a parish of The Society of St Wilfrid and St Hilda, receive the episcopal care of the Bishop of Oswestry.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation, commonly called Confession, is available by arrangement with the parish priest. Enquiries about Baptisms, Weddings, Banns of Marriage, Funerals and other pastoral matters are always welcome.

Whether you have been a Christian for many years, are returning to church after some time away, or are simply curious, you will be very welcome at St Stephen’s.
