Act of a Remembrance at the 'Ruth-Less' Memorial Butts Brow Willingdon.

The Ruthless Memorial is a commemorative monument located on the ridge south of the Butts Brow car park in Willingdon, East Sussex (near Eastbourne).
The memorial honours the 10 American crew members of a USAAF B-24D Liberator bomber named Ruth-Less, which tragically crashed into the hillside on February 2, 1944. The aircraft was attempting to reach an emergency landing strip at Friston after returning from a bombing mission over northern France when it struck the high ground in heavy fog, killing everyone on board. Notably, the bomber had previously survived the famous 1943 low-level bombing raid on the Ploiești oil fields in Romania.

St Mary the Virgin

Thank you for visiting The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Willingdon page, and welcome to St Mary's. We hope you enjoy exploring this page to learn about the life, worship and witness of St Mary's church.

We are an Anglican church, worshipping God and serving the communities of Willingdon and Willingdon Trees to the north of Eastbourne. St Mary's is the ancient parish church of the village of Willingdon, dating from 1100.

Whether you are looking for a church to make your spiritual home, or seeking a baptism, a wedding, a funeral or just visiting this beautiful church, be assured of a warm welcome.

We proclaim God, and seek to make known the love of Jesus, His Son, who gave himself for each one of us. In all we do, we pray too for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Our Church family is open to all as a sign of God’s overwhelming desire to share that love revealed through Jesus.
