The organ at St Andrew’s has been given a new lease of life following a careful programme of repair and refurbishment.
Work carried out this summer included repairs to the action, repalletting a number of pallets, treatment of woodworm in the keyboard timber, and attention to the voicing. The organ is now back in use, with a final check to be made on a slight remaining wheeze.
The history of the instrument is rather unusual. Earlier records describe St Andrew’s as having only a harmonium. In the 1970s the church began looking for something more substantial, and in 1977 the present organ was installed by E. & W. Storr. It was one of the firm’s earliest commissions and incorporated parts from an earlier instrument associated with Hellesdon Hospital.
The organ has served St Andrew’s for nearly fifty years, accompanying worship and village occasions, so it is good to hear it sounding properly again.
We are very grateful to everyone who has helped make the refurbishment possible.
