Church of England Diocese of Oxford Longcot with Fernham

About Us

St Mary the Virgin Church is the parish church in Longcot in the Shrivenham & Ashbury Benefice. The ecclesiastical parish includes the village of Fernham and its chapel of ease (St John the Evangelist).

We are in the process of appointing a new Incumbent, who will live in Shrivenham. The Ministry Team consists of a House for Duty Priest/Associate Vicar, Revd Norma Fergusson who lives in Ashbury, two Licensed Lay Ministers, two retired clergy, and an Authorised Minister. There are other lay members who help lead Family Worship and Morning Prayer.

Three or four Sunday services are held every month – a combination of family communion and evensong – and there is a joint service with local Methodists on the first Sunday of each month. Evening Prayer is said on most Tuesday evenings.

St Mary’s church dates back to the 13th century, with a large barn-like nave, small chancel and an 18th century tower, which was re-equipped with a fine peal of eight bells for the Millennium. We have our own active bell ringing team and the Longcot Tower is a flourishing teaching centre for the Benefice, the Deanery and the surrounding area.
