This year we have two Lent Groups, both on the same theme, the ‘Instruments of the Passion’. These are the objects associated with the betrayal, trial and crucifixion of Christ – the cross, the crown of thorns, the nails, the spear that pierced his side, the sponge soaked in sour wine (or vinegar, essentially the same thing), Jesus’ seamless robe that the soldiers diced for, the dice themselves, and so on,

I’m very grateful to an old friend of mine from Witham, Vikki Zarb, who is leading the groups with me. Vikki is a retired classics teacher, fluent in Latin & Greek, with a knowledge of the ancient world that I can only envy.

The groups will run for 5 weeks, up to the last week of March, the week before Holy Week. They’ll be quite informal and will focus on the ‘instruments’ and how they’re portrayed in the gospel accounts of the Passion. We’ll give ourselves some time to reflect on how looking at the Passion in this way changes our understanding of this story that’s so central to our faith.

Do feel free to contact Simon for more information.
