After the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot and his subsequent suicide, there was a gap in the group of Twelve Apostles. The qualification to become an apostle was to have been a follower of Christ from his Baptism to his Ascension, and therefore a witness of the Resurrection, just like the other apostles. The choice between Joseph Barsabas and Matthias was made by the drawing of lots. Very little is known about Matthias; he is said to have preached in Judaea, and later (far less likely) in Cappadocia and near the Caspian Sea. The Acts of Andrew and Matthias in the City of the Cannibals is a romantic work of fiction in which Matthias is rescued from being eaten. His supposed relics were transferred from Jerusalem to Rome by Helena (mother of the Emperor Constantine) and then some of them were taken to Trèves in France in the 11th century.
