Gospel: John 16. 12–15

The Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit is central to Christian faith, yet the word 'trinity' doesn't appear in the Bible and the concept is never explicitly discussed. However, in the Gospel today the three Persons of the Trinity are referred to as distinct (so that Jesus can refer to his Father and also to the Spirit) but at the same time fully identified with one another. The image above is a painting by the Spanish artist Jerónimo Cósida which visually represents the idea that Father, Son and Spirit are distinct in person but one and the same in essence.
