Family Communion for the Sunday last after Trinity (Bible Sunday): celebrant the Revd Tola Badejo.
First Reading: Psalm 119. 129 – 136
Gospel: Luke 4. 16 –24
Many cultures preserve their beliefs and values through oral tradition. No doubt the Israelites had their own tradition of stories and principles passed on by word of mouth, but they also had written scriptures, which enshrined texts that could be handed down without distortion to successive generations. The writer of Psalm 119 not only expresses his own thoughts and prayers; he also refers back to an older body of 'statutes' and 'precepts' that he loves, values, and wishes to see put into action.
In the Gospel, Jesus himself refers back to a written scroll of Isaiah, from which he reads the opening verses of chapter 61; these foretell the coming of the Messiah, who will transform the world. In the verses following today's Gospel reading, it becomes clear that his listeners are not prepared to believe that Isaiah's prophecy refers to him - perhaps a warning to us all.
