Family Communion for the first Sunday of Lent: celebrant the Revd Adetola Badejo.

First reading: Genesis 3. 1–7
Gospel: Matthew 4. 1–11

The first reading today is the famous account of the temptation of Eve, which stands as a symbol of the fallen nature we all share. If the story ended with the Fall and the expulsion from Paradise. it would be no more than a sad and beautiful poem, but of course it doesn't; the Genesis narrative sets the context in which God relates to humanity throughout the Old and New Testaments and to this day.

The Gospel narratives of the temptation in the wilderness provide a context for the season of Lent and are central to our understanding of Jesus. Matthew's account suggests the Devil is persuasive, but Jesus responds with confident answers. To be fully human Christ must be tempted as we are; like him, we can find guidance and strength in a thorough understanding of scripture.
