Remembering the Last Supper and re-enacting the washing of the disciples' feet, ending with a time of silent vigil.

This service marks the beginning of the Triduum – the Three Holy Days of prayer that lead up to Easter Day. In reality we begin one service tonight that will last, with interruptions, until the end of Saturday and the breaking of the dawn of the resurrection. This means that, technically, there is no formal ending to this service. Over these Three Holy Days we shall be invited to stay close to Jesus through the accounts of the events that led to his death and beyond.

In this evening's service we remember the Last Supper celebrated the night before Jesus died, re-enacting Jesus' act of service in the washing of feet and sharing in the eucharistic meal together as we remember the words of Jesus to 'do this in remembrance of me'.

Towards the end of the service we move into Gethsemane, the space of agony and betrayal, and hear again Jesus' question to his disciples: 'could you not stay awake with me one hour?'

As we hear of the first disciples scattering in fear, we are invited to stay spiritually close to Jesus in the garden as long as we can and then to leave in silence.

The prayer vigil will continue until 10.00pm. You are welcome to stay as long or as short a time as you wish.

Leicester Cathedral (Cathedral Church of St Martin)

Leicester's Cathedral is at the beating heart of the city and county. A place of calm and transcendence, and the final resting place of King Richard III. Join us online at www.leicestercathedral.org

Our church, built on a Roman site and dedicated to St Martin of Tours, has been embedded in the public, economic, cultural and religious life of this community for over 1,000 years. Since 1927, as the seat of the Bishop of Leicester, we now gather people together for worship, celebration, lament, debate and service of the poor and vulnerable.

We offer hospitality to the wider church, the communities of faith that make up our multicultural society and those who come as visitors to the East Midlands, especially in search of the story of King Richard III.

We invite you to join with us in this adventure.
