Time is not supposed to stand still, but if you look up at the clock on the tower of Fakenham Parish Church from early January 2023 you will notice that time is indeed, “standing still”. This is because extensive improvement works are being carried out on the clock made by Cookes of Yorke in the 1860s. To keep the clock running smoothly and to time, the three current clock winders – Chris, Ian and Kevin – take it in turns to climb the 70 steps up the tower to the ringing chamber where the clock is situated. Once there, and having got their breath back, they manually wind the clock, check that all is in order then return to ground level. This must be done twice a week. The Rector, The Revd Tracy Jessop said: ‘We are pleased that this stunning example of Victorian mechanical engineering is being improved by having the winding system automated. With all the required permissions in place, the Norwich company of S. Michlmayr and Co Ltd are commencing work on 9 January. We could not have started the work will without a generous legacy left for Fakenham Church by the late Raymonde Nelson specifically for work on the clock. We are immensely grateful for her kindness. The accuracy of the clock is the sort of thing people only notice if something is awry, and then people are very keen to contact us!” So time will stand still temporarily when the clock mechanism will be lowered from its current position and taken to the Norwich workshop. The chiming bells will cease and fall silent. It is expected the clock will be away for about two months for the work to be completed. The church is deeply grateful to the winders, past and present, for their dedication in keeping the clock going over many years. If you would like to show your appreciation for the clock and would like to donate for its future upkeep, servicing and maintenance, details are on the church website www.fakenhamparishchurch.org.uk
Preloved babies and children's clothes are being offered for swapping in this new venture at Fakenham Parish Church. Parents and carers can choose from our supply of good quality clothes from 0-6 years and take these away for free, in exchange for a donation of clothes their children have outgrown or no longer need. Where people may not have something to donate, we ask them to drop an item back to us at a later date. The clothes rails are available on Mondays from 930-11am and Thursdays from 10am-1230pm.
