St Mary's has a Saxon foundation with medieval remnants, but was very heavily refurbished during the Victorian period. It contains one of the largest medieval wall paintings in the country, telling the story of St Catherine of Alexandria. There are also monuments to Horatio Nelson’s uncle and grandfather. Eton College is the Lay Rector, and has recently funded the complete refurbishment of the chancel.
Since reopening, after roof repairs, on Easter Sunday 2017, there is a regular Eucharist on the 1st and 4th Sundays of the calendar month at 11.15 a.m. On the second Sunday of the calendar month, there is a family service which is currently held at the Methodist chapel in Sporle (11.15 a.m.), and on the 3rd Sunday of the calendar month there is a joint service with the Methodists either in the Methodist Chapel (11.00 a.m.) or at St Mary Sporle (11.15 a.m.), as advertised.
