Holy week - Good Friday

Lent Easter

Good Friday

Welcome & Opening Prayer Good Friday is the day we remember that even though Jesus was: betrayed, deserted and denied by His friends; maliciously accused, unfairly tried and spitefully beaten by those who opposed him; and sent out to die a horrible death; Jesus continued his mission and fulfilled all the scriptures even as he hung and died on the cross.

Let’s hear the last seven things Jesus said:

1st in Luke 23v34 : Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.’

2nd in Luke 23v43: Then Jesus said, ‘Today you will be with me in Paradise.’

3rd in John 19v26-27: When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, here is your son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

4th in Mark 15v34: At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’

5th in John 19v28: After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfil the scripture), ‘I am thirsty.’

6th in John 19v30: When Jesus had received the wine, he said, ‘It is finished.’ Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

7th & final in Luke 23v46: Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, ‘Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.’ Having said this, he breathed his last. Silence

Let us pray: Eternal God, in the cross of Jesus, we see the cost of sin and the depth of your love: in humble hope and fear may we place at his feet all that we have and all that we are, for the love of Jesus. Amen

Lords’ prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

The Grace May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all, now and evermore. AMEN

Thank you for joining us today. I hope you can join us again for Holy Saturday as we continue our Holy Week journey.

Holy Saturday

Welcome & Opening Prayer On Holy Saturday when we remember that after His death, Jesus was buried in a borrowed tomb whilst his friends and family stayed at home and kept the Sabbath.

Let’s hear what from John 19v38-end (NRVSA): Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, though a secret one because of his fear of the Jews, asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and removed his body. Nicodemus, who had at first come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds. They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it with the spices in linen cloths, according to the burial custom of the Jews. Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden there was a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. And so, because it was the Jewish day of Preparation, and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there. Silence

Let us pray: From the depths we cry to you, Lord God: give light to our darkness and bring us out of the prison of our sin and despair; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Easter Day

Welcome & Opening Prayer Today is Easter Day when we celebrate and give thanks that even though Jesus died and was buried, he rose again from the dead and was seen by many.

Let’s hear what happened from Mark 16v1-7 (NRSVA): When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. Very early, on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’ When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. He said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. Go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.’ Silence

Let us pray: God of Life, who for our rescue and liberation, gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross. We give you thanks that by his glorious resurrection you have delivered us from the power of our enemy. Grant us the grace, from this day forth, to die daily to sin, and evermore live with your son, in the joy of his risen life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

AMEN

Thank you for joining us. Happy Easter – Jesus is Risen
