On Thursday 12 June, the Eco Group held another parish litter pick. Fran, Ian and James spent an hour litter picking along Thimblemill Road – from the old swimming baths to Thimblemill Library – and managed to fill three bin liners between them! This is part of our long-term plan to work our way along the entire parish boundary. It might take us a few years, but every step makes a difference – and everyone is welcome to get involved.Litter picking doesn’t just benefit the environment – it’s a great way to improve our shared spaces, connect with neighbours, and enjoy some fresh air and gentle exercise. Many also find it helps clear the mind and lifts the spirits. Our next outing is likely to be in October – date to be confirmed - and we'll pick up where we left off at Thimblemill Library. If you fancy joining us, we’d love to have you along! Look out more further info in the pew sheet closer to the time.
On Sunday 15 June, after the service, we took part in Churches Count on Nature — a nationwide initiative that brings together churches and communities to record the wildlife on church land.
This survey helps build a clearer picture of the biodiversity around us. By identifying the plants and trees we already have, we can make informed decisions about what to plant and how best to care for the space — encouraging native wildlife to flourish, while also creating something beautiful.
We found we had over 80 species of plants and trees!

The data we gathered will guide our next steps in boosting biodiversity as part of our ongoing Eco Church journey.
One of A Rocha UK’s firm beliefs is that we are more likely to nurture and defend God’s creation when we take the time to appreciate and enjoy it. Spending time in nature deepens our connection with God’s world and reminds us of our role as stewards of His creation. By joining wider initiatives, we not only take meaningful action but also experience the encouragement of being part of a larger community working towards the same goal. This June, there are several fantastic opportunities to engage with nature and make a difference:- Churches Count on Nature (8-16 June): Take part in recording the wildlife in churchyards and green spaces, helping to build a national picture of biodiversity in these sacred spaces.- 30 Days Wild (throughout June): A challenge to do one ‘wild’ act each day—whether it’s planting flowers, watching birds, or simply taking a mindful walk outdoors.- The Great Big Green Week (8-16 June): A nationwide celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. As part of The Great Big Green Week, we’ll be hosting a parish litter pick on 12 June. This is a wonderful opportunity to come together as a church community, care for our local environment, and take positive action. Why not challenge yourself to take part in one (or all!) of these initiatives? Whether it’s counting wildlife, making eco-friendly changes at home, or joining a local event, your actions can make a real difference. Whether you join in as an individual, with your household, or as a church group, every small act contributes to a greater impact.Together, let’s celebrate God’s creation and take steps to protect it for future generations!
