Church History

This document, compiled by Peter Stokes, traces the rich history of St. Hilda’s Church from its beginnings in Rathbone Road in 1907 to its present home on Abbey Road, consecrated in 1940. It tells the story of a growing community, from the early rural setting of Warley Woods through decades of change, including the building of the new church, wartime challenges, and significant milestones such as jubilees, centenary celebrations, and modern developments.

The history highlights the dedication of parishioners, clergy, and local supporters who shaped St. Hilda’s as a spiritual and social hub. It includes details of architectural design, parish life, notable events, and the evolving mission of the church in response to societal needs. Today, St. Hilda’s continues to serve as a vibrant centre of worship and community, celebrating over a century of faith and service.
