St John the Baptist, Cockayne Hatley

We are a small group of people drawn together in belief and faith, but also by the beautiful location of St. John the Baptist and its unique (if not a little quirky) history. It’s a unique place steeped not just in history, but also a quietness that leads to prayer and contemplation.

We are committed to our village of Cockayne Hatley, but also believe this place is an asset to the wider church and those who visit us, often on walks in our beautiful country side.

Our orinciple form of worship uses the Book of Common Prayer and so Traditional language. Its beautfully suited to our church. We have a communion service at 9am on the 2nd Sunday of the Month and a service of Evening Prayer at 4pm on the fourth Sunday of the Month. More recently we have also been trying our Taize style services. Details of services can be found in the Services and Events Tab.

We are just over 7 miles from the busy A1, but you wouldn’t know it. It is quiet beautiful and one might even describe it as a ‘thin place’, that is to say a place or space where the gap between the earthly and the heavenly seems thin.

We believe we are an ideal place for quiet days, vision days or perhaps even courses and lectures. We are also a wonderful venue for music and currently have a partnership with Red Kite Concerts (https://redkiteconcerts.com/) If you would like to book the space or just visit please do get in contact.

We also host regular spring and summer cafes in our space, details of which can be found in the Events Tab.

Our work of fabric and maintence is supported by our village and keen group of volunteers to whom we are very grateful.

We hope to see you soon at St. Johns the Baptist

This service is much loved in the Church of England. It’s a service that began its development in the 16th century but actually has ties to much early forms of worship in monasteries. It uses traditional language and through its regular rhythm is a time of prayer and reflection.

Beautiful form of evening prayer, ideally suited to our quiet location
