The church is on a small island site with frontage to St Mary's Road. The building includes a worship area, large foyer and community centre, which can be divided into smaller spaces.
The church was consecrated on 7 May 2011.
The original church of St Mary Magdalene was built in 1841 and destroyed by a land-mine on 21 September 1940. A second building, designed by Robert Potter, was consecrated in 1962, but became impractical to repair and modernise. The thrid church building was consecrated on the 170th anniversary of the consecration of the original building.
