Liturgy of the Lord's Death

Occurring
for 1 hour, 30 mins
Venue
Bristol Cathedral
Address
College Green Bristol, BS1 5TJ, United Kingdom

The Good Friday service continues with the Liturgy of the Lord’s Death, the second part of the three-hour worship. This service is unique in the Christian year, bringing together readings, music, reflection, and prayer to help us understand the meaning of Jesus’ death on the cross. It begins with a solemn introduction during which the clergy lie flat on the floor, followed by readings. The Passion narrative is then sung by the Cathedral Choir.

The Dean will lead the Liturgy of the Lord’s Death, with a final reflection from Canon Neil, building on those in the Meditations.

A large cross is then brought into the Cathedral, forming the centre for music, prayer, and silent reflection. There is then the opportunity to receive Holy Communion. The service concludes as the cross is carried out and the congregation is invited to venerate it in silence while leaving.

Together with Meditations at the Cross, this service forms a continuous three-hour Good Friday worship, reflecting the hours Jesus spent on the cross and offering both quiet reflection and shared prayer.

All are welcome to stay for all or part of these services.
