Epiphany Chalk Blessing for 2026: 20 + C + M + B + 26. Your clergy team would love to visit your house around the Feast of Epiphany, on 5th January, a traditional time for the blessing of homes and all the life within them. To mark the blessing: the door, lintel or similar are chalked with the 2026 and C M and B for the names of the three wise men (Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, it also makes the initials of “Christ bless this house” in Latin, Christus Mansionem Benedicat).

At St Mary's Epiphany will be celebrated at the 10am and 6pm services on Sunday 4th January. Please contact Rev'd John by email or phone if you would like a house blessing and a member of the clergy team will be in touch to arrange a date with you.

St Mary's, Putney

St Mary’s is a liberal, inclusive church with a strong community identity within Putney. We are part of the Wandsworth Deanery in the Diocese of Southwark. We are Church of England, part of the Global Anglican Communion.

We believe that the good news of Jesus Christ is for all people and brings transformation and life in our community. We believe God calls us to be in relationship with him through prayer and to live lives of love and service. We believe that the Holy Spirit moves amongst us and equips us to live out our calling, both as individuals and as a community.

We believe that our church building is a gift from God to be used well for all of the community, whether Christian or not.

As a church community, we are called to worship God and pray together, journeying with each in the ways of faith. Adults and children are equal members of the church and we seek to have a range of services and groups which allows for all ages to engage with faith and discipleship.

St Mary’s is an inclusive church in the heart of Putney. Inclusive Church is a group of Christians uniting together around our statement of belief:

“We believe in inclusive Church – church which does not discriminate, on any level, on grounds of economic power, gender, mental health, physical ability, race or sexuality. We believe in Church which welcomes and serves all people in the name of Jesus Christ; which is scripturally faithful; which seeks to proclaim the Gospel afresh for each generation; and which, in the power of the Holy Spirit, allows all people to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Jesus Christ.”

Safeguarding

The Parish of Putney is committed to safeguarding children, young people and adults from harm.

We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our own separate Parish Safeguarding Officers for Adults and Children (PSOs) at both St Mary's and All Saints' Putney.

Our Diocese of Southwark’s safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor who advises our PSOs.

If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the St Mary's PSO [https://stmarys.parishofputney.com/home/safeguarding/] or the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor [their details are also on our website page].

If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority’s children or adult social care services.
