Christian marriage is a sacramental rite of the church. It is a grace giving relationship between a man and a woman, which St Paul likens to the relationship between Christ and the church. It is a life long commitment that enriches the life of the couple themselves and wider society, and it is the foundation of family life.
The Church of England's liturgy speaks of marriage in the following ways:
1. It is the foundation of family life in which children are born and nurtured, and provides stability and a context for Christian nurture for all members of the family.
2. It involves the blessing of human life and sexuality in the context of an exclusive relationship, so that Christian people can be faithful temples of the Holy Spirit.
3. It provides mutual support and comfort to the couple in times of prosperity and adversity.
