Book Club: How to Have an Enemy by Melissa Florer-Bixler

Our book for March is 'How to Have an Enemy: Righteous Anger and the Work of Peace’ by Melissa Florer-Bixler.
All are welcome to join in an hour's discussion on Zoom, no matter how much of the book you have read.

Jesus called us to love our enemies. But to befriend an enemy, we first have to acknowledge their existence, understand who they are, and recognize the ways they are acting in opposition to God’s good news. In 'How to Have an Enemy: Righteous Anger and the Work of Peace', Melissa Florer-Bixler looks closely at what the Bible says about enemies—who they are, what they do, and how Jesus and his followers responded to them. The result is a theology that allows us to name our enemies as a form of truth-telling about ourselves, our communities, and the histories in which our lives are embedded. Only then can we grapple with the power of the acts of destruction carried out by our enemies, and invite them to lay down their enmity, opening a path for healing, reconciliation, and unity.

Jesus named and confronted his enemies as an essential part to loving them. In this provocative book, Florer-Bixler calls us to do the same.

Lenten contemplative prayer afternoon

During this introduction to contemplative prayer, we will explore Centering Prayer as well as the Ignatian method of using our imagination to draw us deeper into Biblical stories.

Centering Prayer is a simple method that helps us welcome God's presence into our inner being as we pray. It involves sitting quietly, perhaps using a "sacred word", image or our breath to gently let go of distracting thoughts when they come, thus opening ourselves again to God’s presence.

The Ignatian method of imaginative prayer helps us enter a Gospel scene using all five senses. By visualizing the setting, hearing, smelling, and touching, we engage with Jesus personally, allowing the scene to unfold in the imagination to foster a deeper, intimate relationship with God.

All are welcome, and light refreshments will be provided.
