Train derailment and loss of life at Adamuz

Last night at least 39 people lost their lives and some 170 were injured, in a rail tragedy following the derailment of a high speed train from Malaga to Madrid, which then fell into another train from Madrid to Huelva. The accident happened near the small town of Adamuz north of Cordoba.

Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones, to the many injured and to those who have worked through the night to free them and to treat them.

As the extent of the tragedy became clear, St George’s posted this prayer on its website:

Lord, we pray for those who have been devastated by this tragedy. We remember those who have lost their lives so suddenly. We hold in our hearts the families forever changed by grief and loss. Bring them consolation and comfort. Surround them with our prayers for strength. Bless those who have survived and heal their memories of trauma and devastation. May they have the courage to face the days ahead.

Help us, as we can and as we are asked, to respond with generosity in prayer, in assistance, and in comfort to the best of our abilities. Keep our hearts focused on the needs of all the community. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

The prayer was written by the Rt. Rev. Greg Rickel, Bishop of Olympia in Washington state, after hearing about the catastrophic derailment of the Amtrak Cascades south of Seattle, in 2017.
