Getting here

St Michael and All Angels is part of the Five Alive Mission Community: Dalwood, Kilmington, Shute with Whitford, Stockland and Yarcombe.

Stockland is a rural village and parish with a population of around 600 people.  Farming is the major occupation, although there are a number of small businesses. There is a mix of local Devon residents and those migrated in retirement or towards retirement. The village has a busy core of old and new housing with a further number of hamlets nearby.  There are numerous young families in the parish, making for an active rather than dormitory village in style.  The centre comprises the Church, Village Hall, the V.C. Primary school, now having Academy status, with just over 100 children from the surrounding area.

St Michael & All Angels

The church building shows evidence of an earlier 12th Century building with Norman Romanesque arches surviving on the South wall of the chancel, and a 13th Centry Lancet window in the Broadhayes Chapel.   However, most of the church, including the 100ft tower, was rebuilt in the 14th Century with the addition of a North aisle in the 15th Century. The six bells date from 1603.  There is a kitchen area at the back of the church, two toilets, both having disabled access.  Coffee, tea, soft drinks and biscuits are served after the 11.00 a.m. services for social inter-action.

There is a Lay Pastoral Team and a Family Service Team, and support from the Friends of St. Michael’s Church, who assist with the provision of items required by the church, and help with organising social events to bring the church and village together.
