Welcome to the page for St Andrew's, South Tawton. We belong to the family of churches called the Whiddon Parishes in the Diocese of Exeter. We share a common desire to communicate the good news of Jesus, demonstrating care for the vulnerable, our communities and the wider Creation.
It is a difficult time for our beautiful Grade 1 Listed building. We are having to replace the entire roof to make sure that St Andrew's remains open. This is a real challenge, but we want to maintain this sacred place for everyone in the parish and visitors (a number of whom come to see the number of fine 15th century carved roof bosses). Thankfully this is also an opportunity for us to work more closely with many different groups and individuals in our local community (and surrounding villages) and this huge project is already bringing people together from all sorts of backgrounds. St Andrew's has witnessed to the faithfulness of our God for many centuries and we pray that this will continue to be the case for many generations to come. If you'd like more information about how you can support the launch of the Friends of St Andrew's please contact the parish office on [email protected], thank you.
As a congregation we are also keen to grow in our faith, our ministry with families and young people and in serving our local villages. Our pattern of services includes monthly Holy Communion (Common Worship & Sunday School), our Family Service and services of morning prayer including prayers from Iona and the Celtic Christian tradition. There is a weekly time of prayer and meditation, open to all every Tuesday at 11am, called Soulspace at St Mary's* and a Monday afternoon group called 'Praying the Bible', also at St Mary's*. Regular Tuesday Teas are held in the Pavilion at South Zeal and our church hosts a number of community events throughout the year - including our primary school's Christingle. We also have an excellent bell-ringing team!
Adjacent to the church is the Tudor Church House, still used for meetings and social activities. The Church House is, like St Andrew's, a valuable community resource, and is open on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the summer (also on Wednesdays July to September) serving morning coffees and cream teas. For more information visit www.thechurchhouse.org.uk
(* Our sister church is St Mary's, only a quarter of a mile away in South Zeal, and in the same parish. See separate entry).
We look forward to welcoming you here.
