About Us

There is no evidence as to when or by whom the first church in Lynton was built. It is mentioned in the History of the Parishes of Lynton and Countisbury by Chanter, published in 1907, as existing before 1170. The oldest part of the current church building is the Norman tower. The nave was rebuilt in 1741, which now forms the south aisle and it was enlarged in 1817, the current nave and again in 1833, the north aisle. The restoration was completed in 1869 with the present chancel. The plain glass windows and carvings date from the Arts & Crafts era (1890 to 1920) and mainly depict the animals and nature from the Benedicite. The oldest headstone in the graveyard, to Elizabeth Sqvier, is dated 1645 and the graveyard was closed for new burials in 1855. The tower contains six bells.
