St John's church is situated in close proximity to Sutton Harbour Plymouth and has a longstanding connection to the fishing fleet and their families living in the parish.

A Shrine to St Nicholas, with a new ikon, has been erected in the church to enable all seafarers (commercial and leisure) and their families to pray before journeying on the sea and on a safe return home.

The Shrine was blessed, in a special service, by the Bishop of Ebbsfleet 20th January 2019.
