Getting here

This lovely little church is opposite the National Trust property of Stourhead, once the home of the Hoare banking family. This is one of the busiest of the NT properties and it is visited by some 400,000 people annually, many of whom also visit the church. We have a prayer tree in the church and over ten years we have received 11,000 prayer requests. These are presented at the altar regularly during a service in the parish, where additional prayers are said. Many of our visitors come frequently, particularly to our twice-yearly Flower Gala.

St Peter’s Church dates from 1290, is Grade I listed and has several Grade I listed Memorials, most of them from the Hoare family. The organ has been recently restored and we are hoping to restore the bells soon.

The lead roof was stolen 18 months ago but it is hoped that a new steel roof will be installed next year.

The church is popular for weddings, and many of the weddings in the Parish take place at St. Peter’s. Usually, we have at least 8 weddings a year, and we like to be able to get to know the couple. Many of them make use of the “connection to Stourton” and are not local people or regular worshippers, but have a great affection for St Peter’s.
