Baconsthorpe: St Mary

According to the Doomsday Book of 1086 there was a church in Baconsthorpe. The current Church dates from the 14th century and is made of flint and stone. It is in good order and was completely restored in the late 19th century. It can seat over 200. There is an open area at the back of the church with a children’s play area and a table for general use, chairs may be placed there when required. Visitors greatly appreciate the Easter Sepulchre and the memorial to the Heydon’s who built Baconsthorpe Castle.

Come and see and celebrate our most interesting Tubular Bells. You can even have a go yourself.

According to Dove’s Guide for Bellringers there are only 4 sets of tubular bells in Norfolk and Baconsthorpe has one of these.

Erected in 1892, they were in great need of repair and in December they were removed and taken to Dorset to be repaired by Nicholsons the only experts in the country capable of doing this. They also constructed a new wooden frame.

Now they are back in the church and will be dedicated on Sunday 7th September at 4pm. Well known local bell ringer, Ollie Watson (you can see and hear him ringing these bells on You tube) will be joining us to give a demonstration and teach anyone who would like to try their hand at ringing these very unusual bells.

Tea and cake will be served to follow..
