FRIDAY 13TH & SATURDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER 2024
THE CHURCH WILL BE OPEN FROM 10.00AM UNTIL 4.00PM

St Mary Magdalene’s Church was built in 1903. It was originally designed as a ‘chapel-of-ease’ for the parish church of St James the Less, but even before St James closed in 1972, St Mary Magdalene had become the main church for the parish. The church, which is surrounded by terraced houses, serves a parish that includes all of Mousehold Heath, which is easily reached by foot.

The elegant church building has a number of objects of historic interest that were transferred here from St James, Pockthorpe, including a set of painted panels (produced by the Ranworth School during the Middle Ages), a 500-year-old baptismal font, and several 16th-century roundels that are set in the windows. Made of Flemish glass, the roundels originated from other Norwich churches. On display will be original documents from St James and St Mary Magdalene, we will be showing a 1950s “cine film”, and there will be displays about the history of our church and the people of Pockthorpe.

There will be activities for children, who will have an opportunity to explore the church for themselves. Refreshments will be available – snacks, cakes, and hot or cold drinks.
