I'm new!

Many people have questions or feel nervous about coming to a church service for the first time. We're always happy to answer questions and talk things through.

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions that might help if you're anxious about joining us:

What should I wear?
Don't worry, there's no dress code! Just dress as you feel comfortable.

Do I need to bring anything?
Not at all. Service booklets and hymn books are provided at each chair, and our liturgy and hymn numbers come up on screens facing you.

Can I bring my children?
Of course! Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me". Children and families are always welcome at St Peter's. Our children's area has lots of toys and books, and we don't mind if children need to rush about or chat. The children's area is in the main part of the church (rather than off to the side!) because families and children are just as much a part of our congregation as everyone else.

Where should I sit?
Anywhere you like. There are no reserved seats at St Peter's.

How will I be treated as a visitor or newcomer?
With a warm welcome. We're always delighted to welcome people, and we have stewards on duty to say hello to everyone who arrives. But don't worry, you won't be singled out or asked to stand up and introduce yourself.

Do I have to join in with singing or prayers?
No. All participation in our service is optional. If you see everyone around you standing to join in singing a hymn but would rather stay sitting, then please feel free. All movement and participation in the service is about helping individuals in their worship. If singing the hymns or standing doesn't work for you, then please don't worry.

What is the 'collection'?
During a service, a basket is offered for people to donate money to the church's mission and the other charities we support. There is absolutely no obligation or pressure to give.

Can I receive Communion?
In our services, we say "everyone is welcome", and we mean it! If you would like to receive Communion, then you are welcome to do so. At Communion, we remember Jesus's last supper with his disciples. For some, through holy mysteries, the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ (through con or transubstantiation), for others, the taking of communion brings them into the spiritual presence of Christ, and some see it purely as a memorial meal. Whatever your belief about the Eucharist, you're welcome to receive.

If you have difficulty coming up, then please just let our stewards know, and the clergy will come to you.

Do I have to take Communion?
No. There is no pressure to take Communion. If you have questions, feel free to chat with members of our ministry team. If you would prefer to receive a blessing, simply come up to the altar during communion and ask the presiding priest to bless you.

Are there toilets?
Yes. We have good facilities at St Peter's, including an accessible toilet which has rails and an emergency cord. We also have a baby-changing table in the accessible toilet.

Is there step-free access?
Yes and no. The entrance to the church is completely flat and at pavement level. We have double doors that can be fully opened if the doorway feels narrow. Please just let us know.
As with many historic buildings, not all of the church is step-free. There are two steps into our side chapel, as well as some steps leading to our high altar. Our Eucharistic services are led from an altar that is further forward, and there is step-free access to Communion for everyone.

Do you have a T-Loop?
Yes! We have a good sound system in place, and all those involved in leading parts of the service will be using microphones. Our T-Loop system is always on. If you have any trouble with it, please let us know, and we'll do our best to help you.

I still have questions!
That's okay, please feel free to send us a message.
